IMG_0036Whether you are swimming in a pool at your San Diego home or are visiting a neighbor’s house, do you need to be worried about your child’s safety as well as your own? According to a recent article in U.S. News & World Report, swimming pools can become death traps more frequently than most of us would like to believe, especially for young children. As that article explains, around 18 millions homes in the U.S. currently have swimming pools, but drowning is actually the leading cause of accidental death among children 1 to 4 years old. As the article emphasizes, a majority of those unintentional deaths occur in home swimming pools.

While kids under the age of four are at a higher risk of drowning than children in other age groups, it is important to remember that drowning can result in the death of anyone, at any age. For kids under the age of 15, drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death. As such, it is important to take precautions to prevent your pool from becoming a death trap, as the article warns.

800px-AmericanAlligatorHow often do serious and fatal injuries happen at large resorts? When a vacationer does get hurt, can he or she hold the hotel or the resort responsible? These types of claims fall under an area of personal injury law known as premises liability. In short, premises liability law holds that property owners—including resort and hotel owners—have a duty to keep a property free of hazards and to warn guests about serious dangers on the property. Why is this an important topic to discuss now?

Given that it is summertime, many families are planning vacations to resorts and hotels across the country. But more salient, perhaps, is the recent death of a toddler at the Walt Disney Resort, according to a report in The Washington Post. The child’s death may have happened in Florida, but it should alert parents in California and across the country to potential hidden dangers on family vacations and to the consequences of hotel negligence.

flames-300x200Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems, have been “promoted as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes,” according to a fact sheet from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. However, as a recent article in Scientific American explains, e-cigarettes have been linked to serious burn injuries caused by the explosion of these devices. While we do not yet have enough information to know about the health risks associated with e-cigarettes, we do know that they can cause serious burns to the hands and mouth, and in some cases can cause fractures and paralysis.

What else do you need to know about e-cigarettes and serious injuries? Can injury victims seek compensation by filing a lawsuit?

IMG_5630___While it might be hard to believe, we are already into the month of spring. Many safety advocates emphasize that springtime is as good a time as any to think carefully about removing injury hazards from your home by engaging in some serious spring cleaning. At the same time, however, it is important to understand the personal injury risks that can accompany the cleaning products you are using to rid your home of unwanted dangers. While the change of seasons often is not as palpable in the San Diego area as in other parts of the state, spring nonetheless brings about a sense of starting anew. This spring, we recommend thinking about spring cleaning, and doing so in a way that is healthy for you and your family.

Making Your Home Safer Through Spring Cleaning

According to a spring cleaning checklist provided by the National Safety Council (NSC), the following are important items to attend to every year:

file3291233869663Each day, San Diego residents visit local hospitals and healthcare facilities for routine and outpatient surgeries. Yet much too often, preventable infections lead to severe and even life-threatening patient injuries. According to a recent article in The San Diego Union-Tribune, six local hospitals in Southern California received fines for preventable patient infections.

Federal Quality Control Efforts Expose Patient Risks

When patients enter hospitals, they should not have to worry about acquiring preventable infections. However, as the article makes clear, hospital-acquired infections are a serious risk for many San Diego County residents. A recent federal review of quality-control efforts in California and throughout the country shows that “too many patients still acquire infections and other potentially deadly yet avoidable complications.”

Is it safe to travel on the highways in California? Whether you are commuting to work in San Diego on the I-5 or are taking a vacation that requires you to drive with your family along the I-10, it is extremely important to be aware of serious car accident risks. According to a recent report from The California Report and KQED News, highway traffic fatalities are on the rise in California despite a relatively steady national number of deaths on America’s roadways. What is happening on California’s highways that makes driving in our state more dangerous? What can you do if you have suffered injuries as a result of another driver’s negligence?

Federal Highway Traffic Safety Data Highlights Substantial Death Toll

As the recent report makes clear, new federal highway safety data shows that “the traffic death toll in California continues to trend upward even as the number of people who die on roads nationwide holds steady.” Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified nearly 33,000 auto accident fatalities and about 2.3 million accidents that resulted in injuries. While that death toll might strike you as shockingly high—and it is a high number, to be sure—it actually represents a decline in the total number of nationwide auto accident deaths from the previous year. Between 2013 and 2014, auto accident collisions caused 44 fewer fatalities.
